The Skinny: Resveratrol & Anti-Aging

Resveratrol promotes cardiovascular health through its antioxidant action and its ability to promote healthy platelet function and maintain healthy arachidonic acid metabolism. What does this mean? Resveratrol has been linked to prolonging life because of its anti-aging benefits.

Resveratrol & Red Wine
Though it is found in the skin of red grapes and in other fruits and commonly associated with the health benefits of red wine because of its powerful antioxidant and cardioprotectant properties, red wine actually contains only a small amount of resveratrol—on the order of 0.1-14.3 mg/l according to the study Biotransformationof Piceid in Polygonum Cuspidatum to Resveratrol by Aspergillus Oryzae. Though we would never recommend against enjoying a glass of red wine, you’ll need to obtain resveratrol in a supplement, such as that found in our WellnessPack.

Japanese Knotweed
The resveratrol found in PruTectRx supplement bundle, WellnessPack, is derived from one of the richest known sources: polygonum cuspidatum otherwise known as Japanese knotweed or "itadori" in Japanese, which is an herb utilized for centuries. Also native to China and Korea, Japanese knotweed is a herbaceous perennial plant and considered an invasive species in the United States. Resveratrol is extractred from Japanese knotweed because of its high concentration and wide availability, which helps keep costs down.

Here's what David Sinclair, Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics and Co-Director of the Paul F. Glenn Laboratories for the Biological Mechanisms of Aging at Harvard Medical School, has to say about resveratrol at TEDMED: http://youtu.be/xCGwhXOP8_Y

Vitamin D & Increasing Hip Strength

While some reports have found it unclear if vitamin D strengthens hip strength, a new report that appears in the New England Journal of Medicine has found otherwise.

The Report, has concluded the following:

Note the ≥800 IU daily: we recommend 4,000 to 5,000 IU of vitamin D3 daily.

This report was supported by a professorship grant from the Swiss National Foundation and a grant from the European Commission Framework 7 Program.

Which Is More Important for a Longer Life: Telomeres or Cholesterol?

Recently, you've been hearing a lot from us about how lengthening telomeres can increase your lifespan. While you may have doubts about this information coming from Chrissy, consider this from Dr. Joseph M. Raffaele, MD—the co-founder of PhysioAge Medical Group, a clinical practice in New York City that is at the leading edge of the emerging field of medicine focused on scientifically sound approaches to staying younger longer.

"A telomere is the protective cap at the end of a chromosome, the thread-like structure that carries the genetic material of our cells. Think of it as akin to the plastic tips that prevent the ends of a shoelace from fraying. Telomeres keep our chromosomes intact, healthy and functioning—allowing them to reproduce cells, which is the key to healthy aging, if not life itself."

If you're interested in measuring the length of your telomeres, take the test and let us know if you have questions about TA-65 Anti-Aging.

Tip of the Day: Take Vitamin D with Food

According to a new report, Taking Vitamin D With the Largest Meal Improves Absorption and Results in Higher Serum Levels of 25-Hydroxyvitamin D by Guy B. Mulligan and Angelo Licata, taking vitamin D supplements during the largest meal of the day will improve absorption and increase serum levels of 25(OH)D.

This is important as many patients treated for vitamin D deficiency fail to achieve an adequate serum level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] despite high doses of ergo- or cholecalciferol. The objective of this study was to determine whether administration of vitamin D supplement with the
largest meal of the day would improve absorption and increase serum levels of 25(OH)D.

This was a prospective cohort study in an ambulatory tertiary-care referral center. Patients seen at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation Bone Clinic for the treatment of vitamin D deficiency who were not responding to treatment make up the study group. Subjects were instructed to take their usual vitamin D supplement with the largest meal of the day. The main outcome measure was the serum 259(OH)D level after 2 to 3 months. Seventeen patients were analyzed. The mean age ( ±SD) and sex (F/M) ratio were 64.5 ± 11.0 years and 13 females and 4 males, respectively. The dose of 25(OH)D ranged from 1,000 to 50,000 IU daily. The mean baseline serum 25(OH)D level ( SD) was 30.5 ± 4.7 ng/mL (range 21.6 to 38.8 ng/mL). The mean serum 25(OH)D level after diet modification ( ±SD) was 47.2 ± 10.9 ng/mL (range 34.7 to 74.0 ng/mL, p<.01). Overall, the average serum 25(OH)D level increased by 56.7% ±36.7%. A subgroup analysis based on the weekly dose of vitamin D was performed, and a similar trend was observed.

Thus it is concluded that taking vitamin D with the largest meal improves absorption and results in about a 50% increase in serum levels of 25(OH)D levels achieved. Similar increases were observed in a wide range of vitamin D doses taken for a variety of medical conditions.
